On Monday 27 February we were fortunate enough to host a workshop facilitated by Piyush Chanana, Senior Research Scientist from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.
The workshop was to demonstrate the use of the Smartcane™, which is an electronic travel aid for persons with visual impairment. Smartcane™ uses ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles within a distance of 3 metre and conveys information about distance through distinctive vibratory patterns. This enables users to navigate around obstacles safely without touching or bumping into them.
Our students, staff and members of the public had the opportunity to interact with the Smartcane™ and to learn about other assistive devices that are currently being developed in India.
