South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind (GDA) visitd the N G Kerk Three Rivers East on 7 June. Supported by Puppy Raiser, Lanti van der Merwe, and Puppy Omo, and Guide Dog Owner, Melette Els, with her four-footed companion, Quin, we spent a lovely morning with the Senior Citizens from the Herfsvreugde club. As per their name, they are a delightful group of loving and caring Seniors having fun! The name Herfsvreugde means “Autumn Joy” – truly a characteristic of the club!
We screened the GDA dvd, showcasing our services, with additional info added by Pieter van Niekerk, Head Public Relations. Melette introduced herself and her happy Quinn with some participation from the audience. Following this we had Lanti and Omo behind the microphone to share information about Puppy Raising. Thabang Kotsi, one of our current O&M students was also present. Our audience was so curious and eager to learn about the work we do, and services we offer. We then had delicious home-made soup with sandwiches.
Thanks to Alex Douglas and his team for arranging this very successful and enjoyable visit – even the dogs were treated to delicious doggy treats! The highlight of the morning for me though was to experience the enjoyment of Mr Dirk Stoffberg who at his young age of 98, had the biggest smile when he met Omo in person!
